Stepinac's Nick Raiano had bowled 10 strikes in a row in his game against Cardinal Spellman two weeks ago. This was a position he had been in before.

On two other occasions, Raiano had come up one pin short of a perfect 300. This Wednesday would be no different as he again left one pin standing - this time it was the four pin. He picked up the spare on his next roll to finish with a 289 for the third time in his life.

"(The 11th roll) looked like a good shot coming off my hand, but then it took off when it hit the end of the lane," Raiano said. "Usually after seven strikes, I start thinking about the 300. And it gets in the back of your mind because it is such a big thing in our sport."

Raiano, a Yonkers resident, has a 201 average on the season, the highest in the Catholic league. More important to him, though, is how well his team is playing this season.

"Since it's my senior year, I am more focused on winning the league championship for our team," Raiano said. "I have been very focused at each match because I really want our team to win."

The Crusaders are in second place, behind Fordham Prep, with a record of 64-13. The top two teams go to the playoffs, and considering that Stepinac's only remaining match is against the set scoring from a "blind team," the Crusaders have a very good chance of facing the Rams.

Fordham Prep defeated Stepinac 2-0 in their first meeting, and they split 1-1 in the second.

The Crusaders are also getting good seasons out of seniors John Euvino and Anthony Frabrizzio.
